Dr. BILLY THOMAS

A white dove flying in the air.**In Loving Memory of Billy Ray Thomas: Founder of The Nursing Home Ministry**

Born on August 11, 1937, in Jackson, MS, Billy Ray’s journey through life was one of profound compassion and unwavering dedication. The son of Fred and Irene Thomas, Billy’s roots were firmly planted in the hardworking community of South Jackson. His father, known as the “Yellow Cab” driver, and the local cab dispatcher Ray Thornton, lent inspiration to his very name. Furthermore, his legacy was linked to his street, Porter St., a testament to his connection to Mr. Billy Porter.

As a young boy, Billy’s spirit of adventure sometimes led him astray, as he laughingly admitted, like his mischievous rides on the back of King, the ice man’s wagon, despite being specifically forbidden. These youthful escapades were a small glimpse into the spirited and curious nature that would define him.

Growing up, Billy’s family was woven with music and hard work. His father played the fiddle, and his mother worked at Eleanor Dress shop, showcasing the fabric of their lives. His childhood included church at Griffith Memorial Baptist Church and a crucial moment when Mrs. Ferrell, the pastor’s wife, introduced him to Royal Ambassadors, sparking his lifelong passion for ministry. At just 15, he surrendered himself to his faith and a greater purpose.

Billy’s educational journey led him through various schools, culminating in a B.A. Degree from Mississippi College in 1960. He would go on to shape countless lives as a pastor, educator, and counselor. From Pine Grove Baptist Church in Magee, MS, to the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, where he earned his Master of Theology and Doctor of Ministry degrees, Billy’s influence reached far and wide.

His journey took him to churches in Mendenhall, Natchez, West Monroe, Lafayette, and Indianola, where his impact extended beyond Sunday sermons. He engaged in Crisis Intervention Seminars on different levels, showing his commitment to helping those facing challenges. Billy’s empathy extended to the elderly as well, leading him to establish The Nursing Home Ministry—a testament to his heart for those often overlooked.

On his journey, Billy found his lifelong partner, Sandra Weathersby, whom he married on May 30, 1959. Together, they raised a family and shared their love and faith with their children, Steven Austin, Scott Kevin, Sharon Lynn, and Susan Cheryl.

Billy Ray Thomas’ legacy is a tapestry of faith, service, and love. His memory lives on through the lives he touched, the ministries he founded, and the compassion he instilled in all who knew him. As we remember his life, may we continue to be inspired by his dedication to helping others and his unyielding commitment to making the world a better place.

**Sandra Thomas: Former Board Member and Former CFO of The Nursing Home Ministry**

Born on March 5, 1941, in Florence, Mississippi, Sandra’s early life was marked by close-knit family ties and a deep sense of faith instilled by her parents, Cabe and Jewel Weathersby.

Within her family,  Her mother was affectionately known as “Munner,” a testament to the strong familial bonds that characterized her upbringing. Her father was fondly referred to as “Pappa Cabe” by those outside the family. Sandra was one of eight siblings, with three older brothers and two brothers and two sisters younger than her. They all shared a humble home located near downtown Florence and proudly graduated from Florence High School.

Sandra’s journey of faith began at a young age when her Sunday School teacher frequently spoke of Jesus. This early exposure to spirituality led Sandra to make a profound commitment to her faith, and she was saved during her childhood. Her cousin, Martha Ann Courtney, played a pivotal role in her spiritual journey by taking her to Ridgecrest Baptist Assembly for Missions Week, where she was inspired by the teachings and camaraderie.

It was during her time at Ridgecrest Baptist Assembly that fate intervened in the form of a serendipitous encounter with Billy Thomas, a young man who worked at the assembly. Although they hailed from the same Florence, MS area, their paths had never crossed until that moment. Their initial conversation near an ice cream shop blossomed into a connection, and upon returning to Mississippi, they continued to cross paths. This chance meeting eventually led to a deep and enduring romance. Sandra and Billy were engaged in October 1958, and they exchanged vows in a heartfelt ceremony on May 30, 1959.

Their union was blessed with four children: Steve, Scott, Sharon, and Susan. Over the years, their family grew, and today, they are proud grandparents to 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, a testament to the love and commitment that has defined their journey together. Sadly, they also experienced the heartbreaking loss of a great-grandson who tragically drowned at the tender age of 4.

Billy’s career took an inspirational turn as he transitioned from serving on the Jackson Police Department and working in the insurance industry to following a higher calling in the ministry. Together, Sandra and Billy embarked on a journey of service, leading churches in Mississippi and Louisiana, and spreading love and faith to their congregations.

Their dedication to serving the elderly and the vulnerable led them to establish The Nursing Home Ministry, where they have continued to make a lasting impact on the lives of those they touch. Sandra Thomas’s journey is a testament to the power of faith, love, and a deep commitment to serving others, qualities that continue to shine through her work as a former board member and former CFO of The Nursing Home Ministry.
